Summary
1551. King Joao III of Portugal gives Archduke Maximilian an elephant named Solomon as a wedding present. Accompanied by the Archduke, his new wife, and the royal guard, Solomon and his keeper make their way through the storied cities of northern Italy; they brave the Alps and the terrifying Isarco and Brenner Passes; they sail across the Mediterranean Sea and up the Inn River, until at last they make their grand entry into the imperial city. Traversing a continent riven by the Reformation and civil wars, this tale of friendship and adventure is tempered by reflections of the flaws of humanity. 2010
