Summary
In this Generations episode, follow the story of Hilwie Hamdom, Ali Hamdon’s wife, who found it difficult to raise her children as Muslims in a town where no others practiced their faith. In the midst of the Great Depression, Hilwie helped raise money from Muslims all over Alberta and Saskatchewan to build Canada’s first mosque, in Edmonton in 1938. Attracted by the mosque, the Shaben family moved to Edmonton, and through marriage the families became relatives and business partners. Years later, Saleem’s grandson, Larry Shaben, became the first Muslim MLA elected in Alberta and the first Muslim cabinet minister in Canada. Today, the great grandchildren of those Muslim pioneers are contributing in their own way to building a better Alberta and a better world.– back cover
