Summary
Lilian, a proper Bostonian, is captivated by the attentions of Walter, an enlisted man. When Walter remains in Europe at the end of World War I, Lilian marries the eminently suitable Gilbert. Three children, an indifferent marriage, and countless society functions later, Walter reappears and Lilian recalls her Aunt Tizzy's warning that "even a girl who is not an idiot can behave like one, given the right situation and the right boy."
