- Czarist Russia, 1914. Karena dreams of attending medical school, but can only work alongside her mother, the village's Jewish midwife. They are soon forced to flee to St. Petersburg when the family is accused of Bolshevik conspiracy. The Okhrana - the Russian secret police - are convinced Karena is a traitor and a murderer, and as they hunt her down, Colonel Alexsandr Kronstadt, the man she loves, risks everything to find her.
