Summary
Elsie Knocker, 30, a divorced mother of one, and Mairi Gooden-Chisholm, an upper-class Scottish teenager, found their calling in Pervyse, Belgium during World War I. They drove packed frontline ambulances and nursed wounded soldiers in the midst of shelling and gravely unhygienic conditions. The startling end of the women's friendship remains the subject of speculation. Some descriptions of violence. 2009
