- Summary
- W-FIVEs investigation into GuZoo in Three Hills, Alberta found animals in appalling conditions, pacing in small cages, some fed Twinkies and Dr. Pepper. As the team watched a group of children was encouraged to pet a two-year-old lion; there were at least seven animal attacks on visitors in the past two years. Owner, Lynn Gustafson defends his practices, saying, "It's not a business, really; it's a hobby." Rob Laidlaw, Director of conservation at the Calgary Zoocheck, an animal rights group concern with the lack of regulations, comments, "If you want to open a zoo in Canada... you can operate in any way you want and nobody says, Boo! He calls GuZoo "a disgrace to the people of Alberta" and seeks its immediate closure. Officials of the SPCA and the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) also lament the lack of adequate laws. "Its a question of whether governments across the country have got the will to address the issue," said Greg Tarry of CAZA, and director of Zoo. The problem extends beyond bad zoos. Canada harbours a little-known trade in exotic animals. For example, three times a year an exotic animal auction is held at Waterloo, Ontario. While attempting to record the proceedings, the W-FIVE team was thrown out, but returned with a hidden camera. How easy is it to buy exotic wildlife and start your own zoo? W-FIVE set up "Safari World," a fictitious zoo purporting to open in Southern Ontario. Within hours the offers came pouring in--for lions and tigers, camels and cougars, bears and kangaroos - a rare, breeding white lion form Germany for $110,000 U.S. cougars for nothing, and from British Columbia, an entire zoo for $32.650.
